How to choose skirting boards

Põrandaliistud

The skirting board is the last detail that finishes a floor. It covers the expansion gap left between the floor and the wall and protects the bottom of the wall from marks when cleaning. Põrandakeskus has more than 350 skirting boards.

1. Colour: blend in or stand out

  • Skirting in the same shade as the floor gives a calm, unified result.
  • Skirting matched to the wall blends into the background.
  • Contrasting skirting emphasises the edges of the room.

For laminate and vinyl flooring there are often skirting boards in the same shade from the same manufacturer's series.

2. Material

Skirting boards are made of solid wood, veneered material, MDF and plastic. The right choice depends on the look you want, how much care it needs and the conditions where it will be used.

  • Solid wood goes with wooden parquet. Solid wood skirting can be ordered oiled or lacquered in the same shade as the floor.
  • MDF is uniform and easy to paint. The range includes both pre-finished boards and paintable MDF boards you can paint any colour you like.
  • For damper rooms, choose a skirting board made for those conditions.

3. Height and profile

A low, straight profile suits a restrained interior. A taller or more decorative skirting can be a striking interior detail. Some models also let you hide cables behind the skirting.

4. Corners and transitions

In the same range you will also find internal corner mouldings, transition profiles between two floor coverings, plinth profiles for carpet and plaster skirting with built-in lighting. Around doors and windows go architraves, which are best chosen in the same style as the skirting.

5. Installation

A good-looking result depends on the installation: precise corner cuts, neat joints and fixing that suits the wall. Installation and painting can be ordered from Põrandakeskus.

Quick checklist: choose the skirting to match the floor or the door trims, check whether the same manufacturer's series has a matching shade, and measure the room's perimeter including door openings. Order 3-5% extra.
