Herringbone parquet: wood or vinyl, glue-down or click

Herringbone parquet is a classic pattern in which the boards are laid at an angle against each other. It brings out the beauty of the wood and gives a room rhythm. Põrandakeskus has both wooden parquet and vinyl flooring in a herringbone pattern.

Wooden herringbone

Wooden herringbone parquet comes both in solid wood and as multi-layer parquet. The range includes, for example, oak parquet with oil or lacquer and unfinished parquet that you can stain to your own shade. Oak herringbone combines the durability and natural beauty of oak with a traditional pattern.

There are two ways to install it:

• Glue-down: most wooden herringbone parquets are glued to the subfloor. A glued floor is stable and does not sound hollow underfoot.
• Click: some herringbone parquets are installed floating with a click joint, which is faster.

Vinyl herringbone

Vinyl flooring (LVT) is available in herringbone and chevron (French herringbone) patterns. It is a good choice when you want the herringbone look in a kitchen, hallway or another room where the floor has to handle moisture. LVT is 100% moisture resistant and withstands wear, scratches and UV light.

Herringbone or chevron?

In a classic herringbone the boards meet at a right angle and the ends are straight. In chevron, or French herringbone, the ends of the boards are cut at an angle, so the pattern forms a continuous arrow line.

What to think about before you buy

• Installation takes longer than a standard plank parquet, because the pattern is laid one board at a time.
• Underfloor heating: most wood species suit underfloor heating, except beech, maple and bamboo. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
• Extra material: the pattern leaves more offcuts at the edges, so order extra. The recommended allowance is 10%.
